J and K's IM Musings
We join J and K mid-conversation, chatting about Panic at the Disco's anticipated new album, the latest photos, and the Honda Civic Tour… Oh yes and some stuff about Paramore.
J says:
look at them. Brendan, and Ryan "I have LOTS of issues" Ross
K says:
ha!
K says:
my god this tour is totally corporate sponsorship
J says:
yeah, they are picking up from FOB on this one
J says:
they did the Honda Civic Tour
K says:
yeah, that's right
K says:
I think I blocked out a lot of stiff I probably had mentally absorbed about fob
K says:
stuff, not stiff
J says:
hahaha stiff
K says:
"Panic at the Disco (previously known as Panic! at the Disco, and often shortened to merely Panic!, P!ATD, P!@tD, or PATD) "
K says:
haha
K says:
the abbreviations
J says:
oh i know
K says:
did they take the ! away because it's easier to text PATD rather than P!ATD
J says:
maybe. Is THAT what they have been doing for this year and a half they had off???? Dropping the exclamation point?
K says:
hahahahaha
J says:
can you imagine the conversation?
K says:
making executive decisions like that
K says:
well, they've also been rewriting the entire second album apparently
K says:
and shortening song titles
K says:
thank god
J says:
yep, they chucked the whole thing.
J says:
it was going to be conceptual
K says:
oh lord
J says:
it was a bit bizarre they said
J says:
ooooh
J says:
cutting edge
J says:
the wunderkinds
K says:
was it "pretty odd"?
J says:
"A" is way into Paramore right now
K says:
yep
J says:
it's very mall punk
K says:
oh no- the orange hair
J says:
utterly forgettable
J says:
she played it when I was home several times and i couldn't tell you what any of it sounded like
K says:
you know- we are long gone from the days of MCR
K says:
when you heard something and thought "yeah- ok that's gonna be a hit"
J says:
yeah
K says:
where is paramore from?
K says:
what is their story
K says:
did A fill you in?
J says:
i have no idea
J says:
no
K says:
oh wait- las vegas as well, aren't they?
K says:
let me google that
J says:
i think it is west
K says:
no- TN
K says:
Franklin, TN
J says:
Ah, yes!
J says:
i think i had seen that but forgot
J says:
because they are forgettable
K says:
utterly forgettable

First Ticket Purchase of 2008
In hopes that my daughter A will be moved to England with me by March, I bought two tickets to the Panic at the Disco concert in London at the Roundhouse. The tickets went on sale on a Friday at 9:00am and by about 10:30am that day, the show was sold out. I thought well, if she's not here, I will sell them for a profit and see something I want to see. I'm really bad about that selling for a profit bit though. I'm always thinking of karma and how maybe if I just give the tickets away or sell them at cost, someone will do that for me one day. It hasn't worked out that way, of course. I'm still waiting for karma to catch up with my good deeds.
I'm depressed that these are the only tickets I have bought so far this year. --J

Muse for Hey There Delilah Reveals Her Identity
I was just getting my first cup of coffee when I turned on The Today Show and saw Delilah DiCrescenzo, Tom Higgenson's muse for his hit song Hey There Delilah, revealing her identity for the first time. I figured she would be some girl next door, but she is a nationally ranked runner and an Olympic hopeful and gorgeous! Even though she has a boyfriend, she is going to attend the Grammies as Tom's date. Sweet. Hey There Delilah has been nominated for Song of the Year, which it totally deserves to win. This song had me all estrogenic every time it came on. -K

Shelter For My Soul
During the end credits of 2003's Ned Kelly there is a haunting song called Shelter For My Soul sung by Bernard Fanning, who most of us might know as the lead singer of Powderfinger. With the sad news today I thought I would share the song lyrics. They are just as moving as the melody:
At the end of my days when I’m called to go,
Into the open arms of the Holy Ghost,
To have lived such a life as I have known,
Fortune follows me, but I’m brave no more.
For my great mistakes I will surely pay,
I’m running low and the devil is on my trail,
When fate delivers me all I’ll ask it for,
Is a place to rest and shelter for my soul.
Oh if I could spend my days,
Free from the prison of your gates,
Then I could die a happy man.
Oh if I could spend my days,
Free from the shadow of my name,
Then I could die happy man.
When I am released from this mortal load,
I’ll take my leave but I don’t wanna go.
When fate delivers me all I’ll ask it for,
A place to rest and shelter for my soul.

Cloverfield Soundtrack?
I went to see Cloverfield this weekend and jumped out of my seat about five times. Wow, that movie did not disappoint. Did anyone else catch the thing falling into the Atlantic Ocean off Coney Island during the last scene? I don't usually catch that kind of stuff, but perhaps watching Lost has trained me. Anyway, as I was listening to some of the songs during the party I couldn't help but think of J because Kings of Leon's Taper Jean Girl as well as Spoon's The Underdog played. There's no official soundtrack out, but I did find this link in which someone posted the songs in the movie (I was too busy trying to keep it together to write down the songs!) J, apparently two KoL songs made it in. -K

The Hoosiers
Since arriving in the UK in August, I have been intrigued by this British band called The Hoosiers, because of their name. They sound very 80’s pop to me and their album has spawned a few hits. When I listen to them I feel like I’m eating spoonfuls of sugar directly from the 5 pound bag. I know it’s not good for me but I can’t help myself.
Here’s a link to their video Goodbye Mr A. I’ve been OD’ing on the first season of Heroes so this video seemed like a natural choice. --J

Riding the Storm Out
Written a couple of nights ago...
I was flying to Baton Rouge tonight, but after sitting in the plane for two hours waiting for our plane to be de-iced we were told to deplane; that it would be approx. 45 minutes before we could get back on the plane and to stay close to the gate. After getting off the plane and within minutes being told that my flight was cancelled due to weather I realized that many flights were facing the same fate. So, tonight, I'm spending the night in the Atlanta airport with hundreds of weary travelers and we are all freezing in this god forsaken place. I spent way too many Friday nights in this very place hoping to get home when I was a trainer. The weather down here is so unpredictable. Who the hell knew Atlanta would have snow? Today of all days? It would be nice if the overnight custodial crew out of consideration would not discuss their lives in such loud voices or the riding floor polisher not go back and forth THAT much tonight. It's 3:00 AM, and I've been here for 5 hours now. I have four more to go and if it wasn't for my friend T, I would be sitting here slowly going insane with nothing but CNN International, the open and honest custodial crew, the cold atmosphere, and my annoyingly reflective thoughts.
Anyway, T is heading to Europe soon and he and I discuss what he should expect as a first time traveler across the ocean. He also texts me that he has been going through a big Bjork phase, which made me giggle only because I remember M mimicking her in a loving way by half singing in a high-pitched, faux accent "Eye-m Icelandic, I mek complica-tid noizes." The only Bjork song I can recall is Violently Happy. I don't even know how I know this song, but it's on my iPod and go to play it except that I hit a roadblock. The roadblock happens to be a Nicole Scherzinger song called Baby Love. Yeah, I'd rather listen to this one. Bjork is one of those artists, like Cat Power, who in a moment of creative openness I download and then listen to maybe once. Often, instead of playing it I will some kind of kind of musical roadblock in the form of something more "K", as T used to describe songs he disapproved of, something perhaps more poppy or just more pedestrian. In the spirit of feeling cold, lost and abandoned, I think I will look at the old iPod and see how many of these orphan songs I have that are probably doing nothing but upping the hip factor (or, at least they did when they were new and hip) and nothing more. They sure as hell aren't being played the most by me.
Violently Happy - Bjork
The Funeral - Band of Horses
The Underdog - Spoon
Highschool Prom - Air
Only Ones Who Know - Arctic Monkeys
Good Woman - Cat Power
Riot Radio - The Dead 60s
Nine Million Bicycles - Katie Melua
Breakin' Up - Rilo Kiley
Love Song - Sara Bareilles
1234 - Feist
Hmmm. Not too many. I'm going to try and not analyze this additional shortcoming- you know, adding to the growing list that tonight includes many, many things. I love the hipster fashion, but I just can't hang, I guess. OK, time for some Van Halen. Maybe ELO is next. Hell yes. -K
P.S. I'm not even hip enough to say I love ELO and be ironic about it. I seriously do love them.

The Hives - Unexpected
Back in 2007, at a going away party that my oldest brother threw for me, my brother M came up to me with all of the seriousness of confronting someone with a drug problem and said something like, “Hey, you’ve got to stop writing about music. That stuff that you write about is crap.” He went on and on to make sure I understood how serious it was and how wrong what I was doing was. I stood there silenced by a mix of anger and disbelief. How can my hobby, which no one has to see unless they specifically go there, be this harmful to me? It was probably one of the most hurtful things anyone has ever said to me and obviously I haven’t forgotten it. As I spent the day yesterday walking around London, just me and my iPod, I’ve decided to take Cliff Poncier’s (Matt Dillon’s character in the movie Singles) stance on my brother’s criticism. “This negativity just makes me stronger”. Watch the clip if you can.
So what crap band am I going to talk about first in 2008? I’m as surprised as anyone to see myself typing The Hives. They released a new record called The Black and White Album at the end of 2007. When I heard that Ole Miss cheerleaders did backing vocals on one of the songs and they spent time in the American South recording it, I had to have a listen. Even though they do a lot to make themselves a visual band with the matchy matchy outfits, I prefer to hear them, not to see them. I think I’ll be hearing a lot of the first half of this record.
We all know that January can be a bummer of a month. I have no live shows lined up so I’m looking for anything to put a positive spin on things. If you are looking for fast, catchy, songs that will get you moving in the winter months, check them out. --J

Ben Trussell
As I write this, there is a line of thunderstorms moving through the city that promises to not resolve the drought we've been suffering, but does promise to bring with it a number of tornado warnings. This city is full of people who spend their days trying to control the environment via the space program, the military, or the vast amount of engineering companies that call Huntsville home, but nature will always rule.
That said, I could spend years practicing my guitar and never be as good as someone who was clearly born a natural. Ben Trussell is one of those naturals. I was able to see him for the first time during the holidays, when a coworker and I made a last minute decision to see him play at a local bar. He had a definite onstage presence and his originals were amazing, which is ALWAYS worth noting. You can lose the audience within seconds when you introduce an original, but honestly, the bar seemed to pick up during these times. That is rare.
Born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama, Ben had early signs of talent, and was lucky enough to grow up in a musical environment performing in church with his father and then local band Southern Brothers. By age 16 Ben formed his own band with childhood friends, traveling and playing in local and regional venues including "The Door" in Dallas, Texas.
The next few years, Ben performed as a solo acoustic act, polishing his skills as a lead man, and began to work with Hunstville notables such as Dan Hardin (Bo Bice and Sugarmoney), and David Anderson (Brother Cane), and Mike Roberts (Gary Nichols Band, 5'Oclock Charlie). Ben has also had the opportunity to share the stage with seasoned pros such as Larue Larry (The Chi-lites / The Staple Singers / The Sneakers), Kenneth Ortega (Coco Taylor / Johnny Taylor / The Commodores), and Ron Jeffreys (Merle Haggard / John Anderson / Johnny Cash).
In support of the new recording project, Ben has now teamed with the members of Leaving Madison to form the Ben Trussell Band playing a mix of modern rock, classic rock, funky party tunes, and really pushing his original music. *
Ben was gracious enough to answer some questions this blogger had for him. Watch out for this one. I think it won't be long before Huntsville is forced to let him go. -K
******
K: I'd like to get your take on the Huntsville music scene, i.e., it seems to me that you have to do covers to get booked at all, which has to be frustrating.
B: A lot of times in Huntsville that is the case. There are a few venues that support all original bands, such as Crossroads and The Flying Monkey. It is very frustrating, but sometimes it can be a lot of fun playing covers. We like to slip in originals once we have the crowd into it and they usually respond well. Anytime you get frustrated you have to take a step back and remember that you have the best job ever and if you can't do that maybe it's time to take a short break.
K: How do you envision your future?
B: I envision my future with music. If I didn't have music I don't really know what I'd do. I don't like to think in that dark of a place. It's the way I get through tough times in life. Anytime something bad happens i.e. you end a relationship with someone that you are still very much in love with, or you loose someone that you were close to and you're not quite sure how "everything happens for a reason" I take that pain and interpret it into lyrics and chords the best I can and hopefully other people can find some healing from that. I hope to be successful just as anyone does, but all that really means to me is to make a comfortable living and accomplish the goals YOU have set and do it all with something that makes you happy and nothing makes me more happy than music.
K: Do you have a record deal yet?
B: Yes, I signed with Devaney Records in May of 2007 and we are currently recording "60 Minutes of Fame"
K: Are you touring?
B: No, but some tour dates will be released shortly.
K: Did you have formal musical training, or are you self-taught?
B: I took a few guitar lessons here and there. The rest of it came from just playing with and taking advice from some really good friends and mentors i.e. Dan Hardin, Scott Johnson, Dave Anderson, Michael Cline, Cam DeVaney… the list goes on forever.
K: And when are you getting the hell out of Huntsville?
B: Hopefully soon although even when I'm out touring I'll still come back and play some of the clubs in Huntsville that really have supported me and believed in me just because you never can be too big for your home town.

2007 Concert Survey
Enjoy! Here's to another year with Judakris and many, many more shows.
Individual Acts:
Most Anticipated
K: Kings of Leon. I knew J was such a big fan and I really wanted to see what the hype was all about. I left the show a fan- enough said.
J: The Police. In December of 2006, not knowing a reunion was about to be announced I had read Andy Summer’s book and watched Stewart Copeland’s DVD about The Police and was wishing for an opportunity to see them live. The tickets went on sale in March and the show wasn’t scheduled until July, which is a rather long wait. It was also the priciest concert ticket of the year!
Best Storyteller
K: Pete Yorn. He's a natural.
J: Ana Matronic from Scissor Sisters. She worked the crowd and they ate it with a spoon.
Best Showman
K: Gerard Way during Projekt Revolution. I feel like I have watched him grow up as a performer, but even in his early days he demanded the audience's attention. He just seemed to fully realize his potential at PR, owning everything and everyone.
J: Chuck Berry. The man is 80 years old and rocks a captain’s hat with a sequined shirt.
Show That Gave Us Best Story to Tell
K: Red Hot Chili Peppers, just because it was my first time and the first time we were to write something for a real publication. The evening was an adventure.
J: Foo Fighters. To see Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen walk out on stage was thrilling.
Most Disappointing Act
K: Taking Back Sunday at Projekt Revolution. It was my first time seeing them and I thought I would really like them. They tried to entertain, but the lead singer came out looking and sounding more like a hyperactive dog than anything appealing. Sorry dude- maybe if you don't try so hard…
J: Fiction Plane – All I can say is nepotism. One comes to expect a better opening act at an arena tour. We saw Kanye West open for U2 for cryin out loud!
Best Production
K: MCR at Projekt Revolution.
J: Even though Foo Fighters had two stages that they played on during the show, I am giving this to The Killers because I just didn’t expect it having seen them once before. The stage was Vegas meets bordello.
Best Sound
K: Scissor Sisters
J: Morrisey. I didn’t expect the opening chords of How Soon is Now? to sound just like the record.
Funniest Act
K: Snowden. That crazy bassist /keyboardist distracted a lot of people from the rest of the band and not in a good way. I hope there's been a band meeting about it.
J: Southern Culture on the Skids. I mean this in a good way, unlike Snowden (ugh).
Best Connection with the Audience
K: Gnarls Barkley.
J: I agree with K. We were all praying in the house of Gnarls Barkley that night.
Most Creative Production
K: Gnarls Barkley because of their costume themes that coincide with the opening song that evening. At our show they wore flightsuits and sang Bowie's Space Oddity.
J: Foo Fighters. As I mentioned earlier, they had two stages set up for the performance. One was for the rock and the other was for the more acoustic numbers.
Most Impressive Production
K: Red Hot Chili Peppers.
J: Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Biggest Ass-Hole Lead Singer
K: Not one this year. Could it be that 2007 was a very good year?
J: I second that!
Sexiest Lead Singer
K: Morrissey. That man could have come onstage with a walker and the temperature would still have risen.
J: Dave Grohl. Most of the men in the audience had a heterosexual crush on him.
Best Scream
K: Ajatarra. I may not be the audience for that band, but the vocalist kicked ass.
J: Dave Grohl. Yes, I know, not very original.
Worst Opening Act
K: Snowden.
J: Snowden – Having to watch this band twice was as painful as it got in 2007. I had nightmares that KoL would bring them over to the UK for their tour here. Fortunately, Manchester Orchestra opened instead.
Honorable Mention
K: I have a tie - Mindless Self Indulgence and Swallow the Sun
J: I have a tie as well. The Features – It’s rare that I buy a CD after a show of the opening band. Earl Greyhound – We saw them in a tiny bar in St. Louis but they played like it was a packed arena.
Shows:
Best People Watching
K: HIM at Projekt Revolution. Where I was on the lawn people were just going at it with each other. It was pretty crazy.
J: Chuck Berry. The audience was very diverse.
Best Post-Show Feeling
K: Another tie - MCR in Chicago and HIM in St. Louis.
J: Kings of Leon in St. Louis. Besides Snowden, this was the perfect concert experience from the fact that it was on a Friday, to the venue, to my concert partner, to our seats, and the mood of the band.
Most Anticipated Song Not Performed
K: Sigillum Diaboli - HIM
J: Red Morning Light – Kings of Leon
Most Disappointing Night
K: I can't name one really disappointing night in 2007. Wow.
J: I can’t either.

A Look Back - 2007
At the beginning of 2007 I had a premonition – it would be a year of change. Now some might say that could be a self-fulfilling prophecy, but it was certainly that. I am writing this as I travel back across the Atlantic to my new home in England thinking about the music that seduced me in the last year. I don’t know what 2008 will bring. Right now I’m in a very contemplative state.
In terms of albums, the Amy Winhouse record probably grew on me more than any. I started out the year being pretty suspect of it, but now from start to finish, I love it. Of course, as I have said here before, Spoon’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga was my favourite record of 2007. As for singles, here’s a list. Note, I hate myself for liking some of these. --J

Dethklok
A coworker said to me today that he has been faithfully watching this animated show called Metalocalypse in which this metal band called Dethklok basically rules the world. I watched the first episode tonight online and it's hilarious. I read that members of Metallica have done voice overs for the show. The endorsement situations in the episode I watched were too funny. -K

The Countdown
I just found this on YouTube. About 25 seconds in you'll see my arms raise in front of the owner to take a picture (look for the red band on the right wrist). During the countdown the photog next to me grabbed my hand and we held them up high at the final moment. And then comes the champagne. I love that you can hear the reaction from those that got hit! What an evening--I will never forget it. -K

Hyvää Uuttavuotta! Unbelievable New Year's at Helldone
When I arrived in Helsinki last week, the city was about to move into its second consecutive New Year's without snow, the Helldone Festival was about to begin its third consecutive year as a full on festival splitting bands between Tavastia and neighboring Semifinal, and I was in the city for the event for the first time. Given photo access and a guest list welcome, I spent three nights at Tavastia checking out the local color, seeing a classic goth band perform, and experiencing a New Year's for the books.
Each night I was there I saw men dressed up not as Bam Margera, as you find in the States, but as Ville Valo himself. There were blazers and beanies and high cheekbones. There was also this guy who looked straight out of DSBH: the build, the hair, the make-up, and tight flared jeans with the ironically patterned man-blouse. There were many at Tavastia paying homage to their living idol all three nights. Mostly, however, there was just a lot of black clothes and hardcore gothic-types (not necessarily HIM fans) who seemed very serious about their "thing". Gorgeous and quiet most of them were, and some I couldn't peel away from.
My first night at Tavastia gave me the opportunity to see some less-known, local bands like The Black League and Swallow the Sun. Formed in 1998 by lead singer Taneli Jarva, The Black League looked and sounded like a traditional southern rock band: visions of Lynyrd Skynyrd and a bit of twang. This band has four albums under their belt and worked their asses off onstage from what I saw. Finnish death/doom metal act Swallow the Sun rocked the hell out of the venue on the first night. I couldn't understand a word lead singer Mikko Kotamäki screamed, but I couldn't care less. He had the audience wrapped around his little finger, and that is always great to watch for an up and coming band. One thing I liked as well, was that although I don't get into the vacuum cleaner vocal styling, the music had a certain melodic quality which makes it a helluvalot more accessible to me. Incidentally, the band's third album, Hope, has guest vocals from Amorphis' Tomi Joutsen and Katatonia's Jonas Renske, so this band has the respect from fellow more successful peers, which is something to always note, in my opinion. Jussi69 was in the bar on this night.
On the second night, I had a taste of Finnish Black Metal with band Ajatarra. Amorphis' former lead singer, Pasi Koskinen, aka Ruoja, now fronts this band. It was quite an experience. I am clearly not the audience for this music. I heard a drunk-looking Brit tell his friend that they should go to Semifinal since this band "sucks". I honestly could not tell if they sucked or not- how sad is that.
One of Katatonia's named influences performed as the headliner on the festival's second night. English 80s goth band Fields of the Nephilim were personally asked by Ville Valo to perform as guest of honor. Much like the New York Dolls, Fields of the Nephilim did not experience mainstream success; rather, they influenced their scene with their dust and death imagery and music. Knowing this, I got a chill when the lights went low and the smoke curled and the death cowboys ominously took the stage. It should be noted that of all the performances I took pics for at Helldone, FotN's was the most heavily populated by photogs. There were so many that we could barely move around each other. On this night I had a brush with Ville Valo, though in a flash he had disappeared backstage. Jesse Valo was also in the crowd, looking chic with a fedora hat and good genes.
On the last night, as I stood in line to check in with the staff, I heard some folks behind me talking about how last year's total line-up was far superior with bands like Cathedral, Anathema, and Amorphis. It just goes to show that you can't please everyone.
Performing on the third night just before HIM was the energetic punk/ rockabilly band The Skreppers. These guys recently headlined the Helsinki Burlesque Festival which seems like a most entertaining event. Anyway, you can check out The Skreppers video for He's My Sister here.
Considering that I had spent some of my afternoon chatting with Kari Valo in his now infamous sex shop Aikuisten Lelukauppa, I got the feeling while watching The Skreppers perform that 12/31/2007 might be a day meant for confession. Besides blushing at the HIM branded multi-stranded hand whip that he showed me and some other fans who had found their way into the store, I assessed the best Finnish porn mags with Mr. Valo to buy for a friend of mine back in the states (seriously). I know, it all seems so inappropriate, doesn't it? More unusual was that I was in a sex shop at 1:00 PM in Helsinki discussing what magazine would be the best representation of Finnish porn with the intention of it being a souvenir. Forget that I was discussing it with the father of Ville Valo.
After The Skreppers left the stage it was time for me to check in with the photog group and wait to be herded into the front of the stage. Around this time I ran into Ville's dad and said hello again. A very charming man, he's more than willing to help you increase your HIM memorabilia collection by selling you all the naughty HIM gear you can't find in Hot Topic! Ville's mother, Anita, was standing next to Kari. She is a petite little thing with gorgeous skin and a stunning smile. Ville featured her on their very first EP '666 Ways to Love', now out of print. I wonder if those two congratulate each other every day for producing such beautiful offspring.
Before midnight, a fellow photographer and I were situated just in front of Ville's microphone and shared a few stories about the event. In a few minutes everyone focused on the owner of Tavastia, who had taken the stage to count down the last few moments of 2007. At midnight, he popped open a bottle of champagne and sprayed every one of us that were close enough to the stage. In this situation, having a little camera helped, because I could hear the collective gasps of the fellow photogs who came in with all their gear that was now quite wet from the champagne! At 12:05 AM on 1/1/2008, the Helsinki hometown heroes that have put Finland on the map appeared before the capacity crowd ready to play to hundreds of fans, friends, and family.
HIM started strong with Passions Killing Floor and moved through a rocking set that included favorites such as Vampire Heart, Poison Girl, and Bleed Well. You can see Ville's champagne drenched setlist here, but highlights for me were Vampire Heart, Funeral of Hearts (which was presented to us by a shirtless Ville. Very nice.), Join Me (which always makes me fondly think of M stripping) and It's All Tears.
Halfway through the set, the four Karhu beers I drank had not yet kicked in, but once they did I called my parents back home screaming into the phone that I was having the time of my life. Oh dear lord. I think there may have been some shits, f*cks, and damns in there, but I can't be sure.
At some point during the show, someone threw their American (I think) passport onstage. Ville picked it up, delivered some witty banter, and then said something like "well, at least now I will know where your tits will grow up." Did I hear that right? Ha! Seriously, who throws their passport? I'm a fan, but I'd much sooner throw Euros onstage than my passport. You need that shit to get home!
Besides gifting us with a shirtless performance for the latter part of the set, the band performed The Sacrament and Razorblade Romance as encores. Yes, we got encores, which is a rare treat with these guys.
A Russian fan emailed me and said that Ville's performance was like night and day from last year's, when he seemed to jeer at the fools who bothered to come. To many who attended this year, he seemed connected, appreciative, charming, and once again to love what he does. He appeared skinny, but healthy, and his voice, as it did during the last US tour, was rich again. He even got playful, replacing "I want you to love me" with "I want you to f*ck me" in Razorblade Romance's Razorblade Kiss.
As I was leaving, I got slammed up next to Kari Valo and so I said hello. Again. I was mortified that he thought I was stalking him.
Helldone was one of the most extraordinary events in my blogger career. I think that it's fair to say that though it was a small event in comparison to other outdoor festivals, it was the most well-organized and easy events I've ever been to, though presence of security was not the obvious reason for it! Indeed, I hardly found any security at all and yet well-known and less-known musicians mingled with the crowd as though we were all equal- wow, that's a notion that is new, isn't it. As a festival, Helldone strips the idea that one artist is better than the other. It seems to be a forum in which live music, not corporate sponsorship, reigns no matter if you are a veteran of goth rock, a band whose following is ever-growing, or a lead singer who can turn a performance into an X-rated affair by just taking his shirt off. It was worth the long journey and the tears I cried on the way home. -K
Check out the rest of the HIM pictures I took on our buzznet page. There are a lot, so enjoy!

Helldone HIM Setlist and Preview
It's been a phenomenal trip to dark and beautiful Helsinki, culminating into the big bang performance last night. I had a good cry fest this morning as I started to organize my suitcase for tomorrow's early flight back home. I cannot believe how much I was able to do in a few days including a hilarious trip to Kari Valo's sex shop.
I had always heard that there were naughty HIM items out there and now I know where you can buy them. When I was handed a HIM whip I immediately handed it back and for whatever reason this came out of my mouth: "I'M FROM ALABAMA!" What has that got to do with the time of day? Anyway, I also learned that if you want to get drunk Finnish men to notice you, you should wear a t-shirt that advertises a local sex shop. Not that I mind; there is something in the water here that makes people gorgeous. Actually, Finland is the only European country I've been to whose tap water can be drunk without being boiled first so there is something different about it for sure.
Standing in the photog pit last night, we got sprayed with champagne at midnight then had Ville tower over us to begin the performance. Can't get better than that (well, actually I guess it could...) He honored us by taking his shirt off towards the end of the set. AND, they actually gave us an encore! There was a lot of booze flowing, lots of love happening, and I met some great people (except for the one drunk Estonian photog who in the same breathe told me America was stupid and that he loved my body JUST as Ville walks by and I miss an opportunity for a great shot).
For those that care, Ville has the goatee again and is looking skinnier than ever. His long, curly locks flared out from under his beanie looking very DSBH last night. It's killing me that I can't show you pics yet, but I brought the wrong damn usb cord! argh. While he was completely covered for the majority of the set, he was shirtless for the last bit which was a nice little present.
Besides Ville's mom, dad, and brother, Jussi69 was definitely at Helldone and I heard that Andy McCoy was hanging out outside for a time last night, but I never saw him come in. Ville's photog friend Ville, who took the official pics last year was hanging around the bar all night.
I will be in touch with pics and reviews asap. -K
