Me and the Hip Kids of London See a Movie

I can’t help but think it was intentional that Interpol played overhead as I sat in the lounge of the Curzon Soho Cinema waiting to go see Control. At that moment, Joy Division’s influence seemed obvious. Control tells the story of Ian Curtis, lead singer of Joy Division, from the beginning of his career to his eventual suicide. If you are a fan of their music, it is unbelievable. The director, Anton Corbijn, is a famous photographer. The film is shot in black and white, and almost every frame looks like a beautiful photograph. The whole tortured artist bit can be tiresome to watch, but this film hit the right note where the audience could still empathize. The humorous dialogue during band scenes also keeps the movie from being a complete downer. --J
